What is a pH Increaser for swimming pools?
The term pH Increaser is a generic name for any substance that can raise the pH level of an aqueous solution. Other names may include pH plus, pH raiser, or pH up, but actual chemicals to increase pH would be soda ash (sodium carbonate) or baking soda (sodium bicarbonate). Although baking soda is specifically used to raise total alkalinity, the pH will typically rise as well.
[sc:ad_middle]At low pH levels, swimming pool water is acidic and can be corrosive to the pool surfaces and equipment and irritation to eyes, skin, and mucous membranes of swimmers. Adding a pH increaser in appropriate amounts will raise the pH level, and help prevent problems with low pH. Testing swimming pool water pH should be done immediately prior to adding any pH increaser, and tested again about six hours after testing.
