What is Total Hardness in swimming pools?
Total hardness refers to the process where the water comes in contact with calcium, magnesium or large quantities of limestone and similar element that causes the increase of ions present in it, rendering the water “hard”. It is basically the sum of the hardness of calcium and magnesium present in the water, and can be identified by means of a device that tests the total hardness of the water, such as test kits and test strips designed for that purpose.
[sc:ad_middle]Hard water in the swimming pools can be a problem, due to its high mineral content. Low total hardness is easily solved by adding bulk calcium chloride, although the hardness level in pools tends to rise as chemicals like pool shock tend to raise the pool water calcium hardness level. High total hardness can be reduced by partially draining the pool water, although adding a flocculant and vacuuming the pool has shown to be effective.
