What is Calibration in swimming pool terms?

Calibration is the process of comparing two measurements, the first being a known quantity or level, and the other quantity or level being the result of a test.  Calibration of a device is usually completed by testing against a known quantity or level.  The test result is then compared to the known quantity and an adjustment is built into the testing device if the result is incorrect.  Future tests can then be done with the device calibrated to the known quantity.  Water test calibration is often performed to ensure testing devices are returning accurate results, as water quality measurements are critical to municipal water providers and operators of public water access.

For swimming pool owners, electronic test devices often require calibration.  When testing with a test kit or using test strips, a color chart is often included with the test device and serves as a calibration tool, as pretested water levels are assigned specific colors.  A water sample can then be tested and matched to the color on the color chart.

Incorrect results from miscalibrated test devices may prove dangerous to the health and safety of individuals using public or private pools.  For example, a color chart that has been exposed for long periods in the sun can fade the colors on the chart, skewing the test results.  Test strips can accidentally be exposed to moisture and foul the pads on the strips, invalidating any water test results.
