What is a Color Chart for swimming pools?

A color chart, also called a color wheel, or color comparator, is a table or graphic representation showing different color possibilities.  Color charts can be used to determine and compare results from water balance and chemical composition tests.

For swimming pools, color charts are often included in test kits, or on test strip containers.  For test kits, a color chart is often molded into the comparator tube, allowing for easy comparison of water sample test results to the standard colors on the color chart.  Test strips are also verified against a color chart, provided separately or attached to the test strip container.

The instructions provided with the color chart should be followed closely, as ideal chemical and balanced pool water levels rely on different ranges of colors.  Comparing water test results to color charts should be done during daylight hours but out of sunlight, as the resulting colors on test strips and in water samples can be affected.
